Desperelics is a show that will elevate your pulse and stir your imagination.
Alex Lyras’ play about the effect of desperate ambition is an invigorating one man play in which he portrays a myriad of over-achievers, ranging from a pedophile philosopher, to a Wall Street toadie, to a rappin’ drug peddler down on his luck.
In general, Lyras avoids the easy shots. It’s all too refreshing to experience the unexpected, and. Lyras, under the skillful direction of Robert McCaskill (who helped developed the show), is perpetually surprising.
The show weaves together many ideas: how we hyperventilate through life’s minutia and become blinded to the bigger picture is the central theme.
Lyras is a mature actor, one capable of subtly and nuance, so it’s ironic that his lowbrow New York characters are the most complete.
